DSEA President Tameka Mays released the following statement today about Sunday's devastating fire at Lulu M. Ross Elementary School in Milford:

"Our hearts and thoughts are with the educators, students, families, and entire school community impacted by the recent fire at Lulu M. Ross Elementary School.

The impact of this fire extends beyond the physical devastation. Like all schools across our state, Lulu M. Ross is more than a building where students come to learn. It is a place where children and adults connect, develop feelings of belonging, safety, and community. Our schools are where relationships are built, memories are made, and educators pour their hearts into helping students grow.

DSEA has been in communication with Milford Education Association leaders and the Milford School District to offer our support as they navigate this difficult situation. Students at Lulu M. Ross will have at least a week away from school as district officials assess the damage and develop a plan to continue their learning for the foreseeable future while prioritizing the emotional well-being of students, educators, and families alike.

As educators, we understand the time, energy, and personal resources that go into each classroom. Those materials are collected over years, often purchased out of our own pocket, and their loss can be difficult.  Many of you have already reached out asking how they can help, offering to donate classroom supplies, resources, and other forms of support. This is what makes our union strong. That is solidarity in action, and I am honored to be a part of it.

Our local leaders in Milford are working closely with DSEA staff to share information.  identify needs and determine how we can best support the Lulu Ross community. We will share opportunities to help as those needs become clearer. For now, I ask that you continue to keep the Lulu M. Ross Elementary community in your thoughts and remain ready to help them navigate the difficult days ahead."
