Common Core Standards and Resources

Background:

The goal of the Common Core State Standards is to provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers.

They were developed in partnership with the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers, as well as the National Education Association, the American Federation of Teachers, the International Reading Association, the National Council of Teachers of English, and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

Here are the pedagogical shifts as they apply to the Common Core Standards:

For ELA/Literacy:

Building knowledge through a balance between content-rich nonfiction and fiction
Reading, writing and speaking grounded in evidence from text, both literary and informational
Regular practice with complex text and its academic language

For Mathematics:

Focus strongly where the Standards focus
Coherence: Think across grades, and link to major topics within grades
Rigor: In major topics, pursue conceptual understanding, procedural skill and fluency, and application

Full implementation is scheduled for 2014-2015 school year.
