A bill to provide first-ever state funding to charter
schools (HB 422) passed its first legislative hurdle on Wednesday, May
31st in Dover. If it is ultimately passed and signed into law, HB 422
would provide charter schools with $750 for each student (a total of $5.7
million for the next fiscal year that starts on July 1, 2006).
Under HB 422, charter schools would face none of the
accountability requirements that public school districts must meet to
build new facilities. HB 422 presently is assigned to the House
Appropriations Committee where it will likely be heard next Wednesday,
June 7th.
