DPASII-Revised = Developmental, or interim, plan for next year’s evaluations

Because the evaluation system for teachers and specialists is not yet fully developed, next year 2011-2012, teachers and specialists will be evaluated using a tool that will need your feedback so that we can make it fair and effective in subsequent years.

This is not the interim plan we would want, especially because of the student cohort, and the overall percentages.

There is good news, however:
Your evaluator must be “calibrated,” i.e., have taken the training and demonstrated that they understand and can evaluate you effectively using the rubrics. If not, he/she cannot evaluate you.
All teachers/specialists will also receive training BEFORE they are evaluated next year.
All are encouraged to let their local associations know what is and isn’t working, useful with this interim system of using student test scores.

All of this information and more is also in the May/June issue of ACTION! just mailed.

Thank you for contacting the members of Delaware's Joint Finance Committee

As you probably know, the budget-writing JFC has funded:

  • a 2% raise beginning Jan. 1, 2012 for all state employees
  • a 27th or 24th pay for next year since there is an additional pay-day Friday in the calendar (This happens about every 11 years). How and when you will receive this pay has not yet been worked out.
  • Step increases for all education employees (not just teachers and paras) with state salary schedules (bus drivers do not have state salary schedules)

We are also lobbying for an increase to the state scale of the Paraprofessionals, in line with the General Assembly's plan to bring the starting salary up to the federal poverty level for a family of four.

The plan - derailed by the economic crisis - calls for $2,500 additional to be placed on each cell of the paraprofessional schedule, bringing starting salaries up from $14,645 (service aides) and $17,228 (instructional paras) to $19,728, still below the poverty level which is now at $22,000. The General Assembly understood that no full-time state employee should have to live in poverty, use Food Stamps, etc.

For next year, this would mean an additional $2.5 million to the state's budget.

We thank all the paras and other DSEA members who have contacted the JFC members on this issue.

The JFC is scheduled to finish consideration of this portion of the budget by next Monday, June 6, so we have this one last chance to try to influence them before they vote on this issue.

How would YOU balance the federal budget?
Rep. John Carney hosting an interactive exercise dealing with balancing the federal budget

“Principles and Priorities” is an interactive exercise in which participants learn about the challenges involved in trying to balance the federal budget by making many of the policy decisions facing lawmakers today.

Working in groups of five to ten, you’ll review current spending priorities, suggest principles for the future, and then apply your principles by selecting from several dozen priorities currently being discussed in Washington.

Next Wednesday, June 8, choose one of three locations:

  • Georgetown CHEER Center, 20520 Sand Hill Road, 9-11am
  • Delaware State University, Longwood Auditorium, Bank of America Building, 1-3pm
  • Delaware Tech Stanton Campus, Conference Center, 6-8pm

This event is free to the public, but seating is limited.

RSVP by calling Congressman Carney’s office at 302-428-1902 or 1-800-292-9541.

NBC News Education Nation goes on-the-road this year

In September 2010, NBC News launched Education Nation to engage the public in a thoughtful dialogue in pursuit of the shared goal of providing every American with an opportunity to obtain the best education in the world. To broaden the reach of Education Nation, NBC News has created a year-long plan, including on-air, digital/social media, and live events.

This new Education Nation tour has made stops for broadcast coverage and events in Chicago (5/1-7), Los Angeles (5/13-19) and beginning this weekend, Philadelphia (6/5-12).

In each city, the local NBC station will run education stories/coverage throughout the week across its programs and platforms; Nightly News and TODAY will feature Education Nation stories at least once per week, and MSNBC will link up daily on air.

Education Nation Philadelphia will feature the following:
Teacher Town Hall Meeting
Sunday, June 5, 1:00 pm at the National Constitution Center, Kimmel Theatre, 525 Arch Street, Philadelphia, PA
Moderator:  NBC News TODAY Anchor Ann Curry

NBC News TODAY Show Anchor Ann Curry will lead the live Teacher Town Hall in Philadelphia, providing a forum for Pennsylvania educators to brainstorm ideas and solutions for reinventing education in America, talk about what works in the classroom and discuss the challenges of today's education system.  Teachers will be invited to participate in-person or via webcast with the ability to provide comments and feedback through the Education Nation website and social media platforms.

Yes, we have about ten outspoken local Association leaders and other members in the audience to comment and ask questions! Sorry. No more spaces are left.
