Governor
Markell keeps education in the fore
At his inauguration
last Wednesday, Gov. Markell was clear that education is a
priority but that we have very difficult days ahead.
"We are not here today merely to steady the ship in a
storm, but to embark upon high seas and to sail into stiff
headwinds in the hope - indeed, the faith - that we can and we
will, as always, bring our children and our families home to a
brigher future. .. to a brighter Delaware where every child
can grow to his or her full potential. Where every worker has
the opportunity to earn as much as possible. Where every
family has the health care, housing, and heat they need to
live a decent life.
"A Delaware that is the best place in the world to go to
school, to raise a family, and to start a business."
"We will get there only if - in fact, because - we dare to
be bold in the face of adversity."

Christina's Super. Lillian
Lowery approved by Delaware Senate to be state's next
Secretary of Education |
|
Jack Markell promised DSEA four things about his pick
for Sec. of Education: he would take our suggested nominees
seriously; he would choose someone with classroom experience;
he would choose someone who has successfully run a large
organization; and he would let us know his choice before it
was announced.
Despite pressures to do otherwise (there were strong
indications that a bill was being readied to decrease the
education experience required for this position), Markell made
good on all of these promises.
To read President Diane Donohue's and
CEA President Claudia Bock's
reactions, go to the News Page of the DSEA web
page.
Look for an article about Lowery in the next issue of
ACTION!
What questions would you like us to ask her? E-mail Pam Nichols,
DSEA's dir. of communications by Monday, February 2.
