Federal Race to
the Top application application deadline is January 19: Where are we?
Will DSEA and its locals sign/endorse Delaware’s application for federal
Race to the Top funds which could total $72 million over five years? We
expect so, which will mean we have been successful in adding to the
positive changes we’ve been able to make in DoE’s Strategic Plan,
including assurances in the “sign-off” document that were suggested by
Kent and Sussex local association leadership teams at a meeting with DSEA
leadership and Sec. Lillian Lowery this past Wednesday.
DSEA President Diane Donohue meets with the New Castle County presidents
Monday, December 21. Also present will be DoE Secretary Lillian Lowery.

Bridging the gap between research and practice
The
Regional Educational Laboratory is sponsoring a professional development
day Tuesday,
January 19, 2010 at Delaware State University in Dover
focusing on a What Works Clearinghouse Practice Guide called
"Organizing Instruction and Study to Improve Student Learning:
Bridging the Gap between Research and Practice."
DSEA has agreed to help promote this event, recognizing that most
teachers will have a hard time taking off that day.
One of the guide's co-authors, Dr. Hal Pashler from Univ. Cal. at San
Diego, will present the guide's recommendations and explain the rigorous
research that led to those recommendations. The participants will be
asked to think about how they might best act on those recommendations
back at their schools/districts.
Also coming to Delaware State on Monday,
February 8, 2010, focusing on another WWC Practice Guide,
is "Encouraging Girls in Math and Science." That too will
feature one of the co-authors of the guide, Dr. Joshua Aronson from NYU,
and will invite participants to articulate how they might best act on the
guide's recommendations back at their own schools/districts.
Both days are free and include lunch.
Can’t get off work? Print out a free download of the
practice guides here. .
If you’d like to register, click here and complete and send
in the form.
