DSEA celebrates the best in our community and your students
DSEA's Celebration Dinner was held the evening of April 11, 2008 at
the Rollins Conference Center at Dover Downs.

Roushey Advocacy Award
and Nomination Form
This award was instituted by the Executive Board in 1999 to honor the memory
of long-time Association activist Susan Roushey who passed away that spring.

A
Celebration of Diversity Writing Contest
For students in grades 5-12, this contest honors the top three student
writers in both middle and high school divisions for an essay, poetry,
drama or free verse which deals with the society, religious or cultural
significance of service to the community. Topics might include the contributions
of organizations such as LaRaza, Kiwanis or Lions Clubs, the NAACP, Habitat
for Humanity, as well as community or individual responses to natural
disasters, war, or the plight of people of underdeveloped nations, or
responses to human needs within one's own community.
All entries must include an alphabetical listing of works (internet sites,
books, magazines, etc.) researched as well as any works cited (please
use the MLA or APA style for citations) and, if appropriate, parenthetical
citations within the text of the paper (i.e., title and page number).
This contest is celebrated in conjunction with the Human and Civil Rights
Celebration of Diversity Banquet April 24, 2008 at the
Dover Sheraton.
Three awards are given, with the First Place winner receiving a $100 gift
and plaque.
Details and entry forms are mailing to all public schools in mid-December.The
dealine for essay entries was February 15, 2008.
A Celebration of Diversity
through Service to Others
Art/Computer Graphics Contest 2008
For all grades, K-12, this year's "Celebration of Diversity through
Service to Others" Art Contest recognizes students who celebrate diversity
by portraying how people make a difference through service to their community.
Entries are to be original works prepared for this contest.
Entries may be: drawing, mixed media, painting, textile and fiber, sculpture,
photography, jewelry, metals.
Drawings and photographs should be fixed and matted.
All entries are to have the entry form affixed.
Entries are to be submitted for the following divisions: K-4, 5-8 and
9-12.
The deadline for art entries was February 29, 2008.
This contest is celebrated in conjunction with the Human and Civil
Rights Celebration of Diversity Banquet April 24, 2008 at the Dover Sheraton.
Three awards will be given at that time, with the First Place winner receiving
a $100 gift and plaque.

Christopher K. Smith Memorial Future Teacher Scholarships
- $1,000 scholarships, considered each spring for outstanding Delaware
public school seniors who are enrolled in a college of education and who plan
to pursue a career in education. These scholarships are administered by the
DSEA Scholarship Task Force. They are given in memory of Christopher K. Smith,
a social studies teacher in the Colonial School District, advocate for students
and members and NEA director for Delaware. Former husband of past DSEA President
Earlene Gillan-Smith, he passed away suddenly in 1989.

Mark your calendar for next year's benefit Golf Tournament. It's a
Scramble format. We always have lots of door prizes, as well as dinner and
prizes for winning/loosing foursomes.
The date is Friday June 20, 2008 at Jonathan's Landing Golf Club
in Magnolia. Information, including the entry form, will be posted here
in early 2008, as well as included in spring issues of the DSEA ACTION!
Teacher of the Year Award
- given by DSEA to the Delaware Teacher of the Year (if a member of DSEA).
Since 1986, this award has consisted of an engraved school bell, a certificate
and $250, if a DSEA member, to be used by the winner for the educational
benefit of students. This year's presentation was made at the annual Celebration
Dinner preceeding the Representative Assembly at Dover Downs the evening
of April 18, 2008.
